A word about plastics
At Green Baby we do our utmost to avoid products containing plastic, but some items are very difficult to source in natural materials. Where we have included items containing plastics, we try to guarantee that they are PVC-free. This is because PVC emits toxic compounds, from its manufacture to its disposal. Chemicals, such as phthalates, are added to PVC to make it soft and flexible.
Laboratory studies on animals show that some of these chemicals are linked to cancer and kidney damage, and may interfere with the reproductive system and development. In addition, recent testing by several governments concludes that children can ingest hazardous chemicals from PVC toys during normal use.
When PVC reaches the end of its use, it can either be land-filled, where it leaches toxic additives, or incinerated, where it emits dioxin and heavy metals. Its additive content makes it difficult to recycle. Government and industry are taking action to eliminate the PVC threat. The Danish and Swedish governments are restricting the use of PVC and hundreds of communities around the world are eliminating PVC in buildings.* Green Baby is committed to eliminating PVC from all its products. *Source: Greenpeace
A word about nickel
As you many have noticed, all our clothes fasteners are nickel-free.
Nickel is a naturally occurring element found in soil. It is a hard, silvery-white metal that is useful for combining with other metals to form alloys - most nickel is used to make stainless steel. But nickel is a health and environmental risk. Mining it pollutes the air and surrounding water systems. It also increases the risk of cancer in people working in or around nickel mines. Nickel refineries, where nickel is melted down to create alloys, have the most serious effect on workers. Many develop lung and nasal cancer from inhaling nickel dust in these processing plants. Nickel also causes allergies, particularly if used in jewellery or clothes fasteners which come into contact with skin. Hand eczema is fairly common among people sensitive to nickel* and dermatitis can also develop. With this in mind, we have now introduced a nickel-free cutlery set for children. *Source: Eco-USA
